Level 2 home EV chargers compared: amps, plug vs. hardwire, connectors and listings
Checked Oct 26, 2026. Below are six widely sold Level 2 home chargers, with specs and list prices taken from each manufacturer's own website (not retailers). Prices and stock change often, so check the manufacturer's page before you buy. Where we couldn't confirm something tonight, the table says "not verified". This isn't a ranking. The right charger depends on your circuit, your car's connector and your utility's rebate rules, so read the circuit and rebate sections below before choosing.

- Plug-in: NEMA 6-50 or NEMA 14-50 plug, on circuits rated 40A or 50A, delivering up to 40A.
- Available with J1772 or NACS (Tesla) connectors. UL Listed, ENERGY STAR certified, 3-year warranty, controlled through the ChargePoint app.
- Price: the ChargePoint store's hardwired product page showed "This product is currently out of stock" and no price to our check, so we're not listing one.

Emporia Classic Level 2 EV Charger
- Up to 48A hardwired (needs a dedicated 60A+ two-pole breaker) or up to 40A with the NEMA 14-50 plug (dedicated 50A+ breaker).
- J1772/CCS or NACS/Tesla connector versions; 25-foot cable.
- Lists UL 2594 among its certifications; ENERGY STAR listed as model EMEVSE1. Wi-Fi app with scheduling and utility-rate sync. 3-year warranty.
- Emporia says not every NEMA 14-50 outlet is suitable: for nightly EV charging it calls for an industrial-grade, 50A, continuous-duty rated receptacle. It also warns that its built-in GFCI protection can cause nuisance trips on a GFCI breaker and recommends the hardwired version if your installation needs a GFCI breaker.
- Price: $449 shown on Emporia's shop (white, J1772, hardwired variant).

Tesla Universal Wall Connector
- Up to 48A (11.5 kW) with a 60A breaker. Tesla's install manual maps lower breakers to lower output: 50A breaker = 40A, 40A = 32A, 30A = 24A, 20A = 16A, 15A = 12A.
- Hardwired only: the manual says to hardwire branch circuits and "Do NOT install cord-and-plug type connections."
- NACS handle with an integrated J1772 adapter for non-Tesla EVs; 24-foot cable.
- Agency approvals listed in the manual: ETL/cETL. We didn't find its part number (1734412) in the ENERGY STAR dataset; other Tesla Wall Connector part numbers are listed.
- Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz) and Tesla app; four-year warranty for residential use.
- Price: $660 on Tesla's shop, shown as out of stock, with purchase limited to Tesla vehicle owners "while supplies are limited."

What about JuiceBox?
Enel X Way wound down its North American residential and commercial charging business. VoltiE says it bought the hardware inventory and customer connectivity but not Enel X Way's warranties. VoltiE now lists "JuiceBox EV Charger Powered by VoltiE" models (32A, 40A, 48A and 80A, J1772, plug-in or hardwired) without a price on that page. ComEd's rebate terms list Enel X and JuiceBox chargers as not eligible. We left JuiceBox out of the table. (VoltiE: The Enel X Way Transition, Nov 14, 2025, VoltiE residential chargers, ComEd T&C v3.0 (PDF), all checked Oct 26, 2026)
Match the charger to your circuit
- The 125% rule (the "80% rule"). EV charging is treated as a continuous load, and the breaker for a charger circuit has to be at least 125% of the charger's maximum load (NEC 625.41). Put the other way, a charger can draw up to 80% of its breaker: 48A on a 60A breaker, 40A on a 50A breaker. (Mike Holt, "EV Equipment" (NEC Article 625 summary), checked Oct 26, 2026) Tesla's breaker-to-output table above and Emporia's 60A/50A breaker requirements follow the same math.
- Dedicated circuit. Each outlet for EV supply equipment over 16A or 120V needs its own branch circuit (NEC 625.40). (Mike Holt, checked Oct 26, 2026)
- Plug-in means 40A max on these models. Every plug-in version above tops out at 40A. For 48A or 50A you need a hardwired install. Receptacles installed for EV chargers must be GFCI protected (NEC 625.54), which is why Emporia recommends hardwiring if your circuit needs a GFCI breaker. (Mike Holt; Emporia, checked Oct 26, 2026) Which NEC edition applies depends on your city; ask your electrician.
- Turning a charger down. Most of these chargers can be set to a lower current. Under the NEC, the lower setting only counts for sizing if the adjustment is restricted-access and the new rating is on the label. (Mike Holt, checked Oct 26, 2026) On a tight panel, see EV charger on a 100 amp panel for lower-amp and load-management options.
- Get the circuit size and charger model in writing in your quote. Our quote checklist covers the questions.
Rebates often require a qualified charger
- ComEd (northern Illinois): the residential rebate covers Level 2 chargers that are "smart," ENERGY STAR certified and NRTL certified, and lists Enel X and JuiceBox chargers as ineligible. (ComEd T&C v3.0 (PDF), checked Oct 26, 2026) Funding status matters too: see our ComEd 2027 reopen watch.
- Ameren Illinois: ChargeReady and FlexCharge work through Ameren's partners and supported-device lists. See Ameren Illinois ChargeReady, ChargeSmart and FlexCharge.
- All Illinois programs: Illinois rebates. Check your utility's charger rules before you buy.
The federal credit has ended
The federal home charger credit (30% up to $1,000 per item) covered property placed in service at your main home from January 1, 2023 to June 30, 2026. If a product page or quote still subtracts it for a new install, that's out of date. (IRS, checked Oct 26, 2026)
